What is a heart beat?
If it’s not just rhythm and rate
A song of percussion
The sound of your life force
Rebounding in chest
Caged bird singing
I know you think it’s not specific
Your particular heart
Beating out its particular bass line
But that misses the point
Of how my eyes close against it
How it serenades me to sleep
Night after night
Drowning in the familiarity of the tone
Memorizing every variance
The musical meter of the way you calm the tide
Slow, steady, sure
Maybe it’s not even the sound of your heart beat,
Maybe it’s your hands on my face, your eyes on mine telling me to breathe with you
In and out
Slow, steady, sure
Like the wind on the beach running through the hair you love so much
Or the sound that lulls me to sleep every night as I lay beside you with one ear on your chest
